Rev. Dr. Marvin Wamble Inspires United Methodist Men with Sports and Spirituality

In a vibrant gathering of the United Methodist Men on October 19, 2024, Rev. Marvin Wamble delivered an engaging presentation that seamlessly blended his passion for sports with powerful messages of faith and community. Reflecting on his journey, Wamble recounted his experiences as an athlete, high school football coach, and sports writer, sharing anecdotes that resonated with his audience.

"Growing up in Oakland, California, I was a die-hard Raiders fan," Wamble recalled, humorously noting the challenges of being a Raider supporter while living in Dallas, Texas. His time in Dallas included hosting an anti-Cowboys radio show during a particularly tough season for the team, which he recalled fondly. "It was my first year there; they were 1-15," he shared, prompting laughter from the crowd.

Wamble emphasized the significance of teamwork, drawing parallels between sports and ministry. "I invite everyone to be a part of Team Jesus," he declared. "The one thing about Team Jesus is that we're undefeated." He acknowledged that while life may present challenges, faith in Jesus ensures ultimate victory.

During the event, Wamble highlighted a recent "Jersey Sunday" at a church he was serving, where members proudly donned their favorite team jerseys. He described the camaraderie among the men, noting a particularly humorous exchange with a fellow churchgoer who invited him to "join the bandwagon" of Washington Commanders fans. This moment exemplified the spirit of unity and encouragement he seeks to foster among the men in his ministry.

Wamble's message resonated deeply as he addressed the struggles many men face. "There are men here who are hurting, who are searching," he acknowledged, encouraging attendees to support one another. He reminded them of the importance of companionship and the strength that comes from being part of a supportive community.

Referencing Proverbs 27:17, "Iron sharpens iron," Wamble called on the men to uplift each other as they navigate life's challenges. He urged them to reach out to those around them, emphasizing that there is always room for more on "Team Jesus."

Wamble also touched on the importance of mentoring young men, particularly in the context of African American households, where many lack father figures. "We are here for a purpose," he stated, advocating for building relationships and understanding the interests of younger generations. He proposed organizing game nights to connect with youth through activities they enjoy, such as video games and sports.

As the presentation wrapped up, Wamble left the audience with a powerful reminder: "We don't have to beat Jesus over their heads; if we are living Jesus, they will see Him in us." His words resonated, inspiring the attendees to take action and make a positive impact in their churches and communities.
